Just bought a Mowrey carbine in .58 cal. Didn't even know they made them in that cal. Anyone else have one? Has a brass frame, made in Texas, 24 in. barrel.

I have seen alot of Mowreys but never a .58 especially with a short barrel... :hmm:
I can slightly remember thier online website...
and as far as I can recall the biggest was a .54
Rocky Mt Hunter with brass forearm.
I know they can be rebarreled with green mountain barrels....but I suppose your is stamped
Olney Texas on the barrel flat? therfore it isnt a GM barrel...but original barrel ....I dunno...

Hey Stuffy,
I've had three Mowrey rifles ( long guns ) .36 cal, .45 cal. and .50 cal.
All were iron frames.
I have seen a picture of a .58 ( long gun ) can't remember where (senior moment...I think?? )
But I have not seen an original carbine.
Best to you.

Can't seem to figure out how to post a picture, seems ever site is a little different. If someone wants to email me, I'll send them the picture, and they can post it.
The carbine, doesn't say Mowrey on it anywhere, just Trail guns Amory, Texas Carbine, 1 of 1000. This one is number 217.

Don't know of a brass frame .58 carbine but I have one, it's a long gun in a .54 cal iron frame. It was built in Waldron Indiana. I still have the original paper work. They shoot well. Cleaning is a bit of a pain since the lock is part of the breach plug and are permanently to the barrel. Good luck with your new rifle.

Not to dampen your enthusiasm but there are questions as to the safety of those brass framed Mowreys. I heard of one incident where the rifle was dropped from a tree stand and the breechplug broke off where the barrel meets the frame. That is a natural stress point and brass isn't the best material for a chambered breechplug.

Here are a couple pictures of the .58 Mowrey that I bought.

Thats a purty rifle.! I have one with a blondish stock like yours and its stamped OLNEY TEXAS
on the barrel. Mine is a .50 cal and Mowrey called them the Georgia Tree Gun.

I have one in a .50. Its a Bicentenary Model, one of 500, mine is 198. Had a 30lb trigger. got it down to 9lbs. Mine has the premium maple stock and fancy buttplate. Made in O. Texas Has a gain twist barrel, deep riflings, weights 10lb. Dilly

There at least two solutions to your cleaning dilemma. First, you can buy one of the adaptors that screw into the nipple hole and that have a hose attached to go into a container of a cleaning solution. An even better way, is the way mine is made with three set screws holding the barrel in place rather than the single pin. It's an easy fix requiring you to remove the retaining pin and then drilling and tapping those two holes oversize as well as adding a third hole. Put set screws into each of the holes. When you want to clean the barrel, simply loosen the set screws and remove the barrel. it also makes it easy to have other barrels of different calibers that you can switch out whenever you want. You could have a .32 for squirrels, a .50 or .54 for deer and a smoothbore for birds. Barrels can be bought from Riley Smith at Long Hamock Barrels in Oxford, FL. Riley's phone number is (352) 748-7373. That's who made my barrels for me and they are tack drivers.

I have a steel framed .58 mowery rifle. I bought this rifle at a gun show in Wichita Falls, Tx from Mr. Mowrey himself (about 30 years ago). I retired the rifle a few years ago but have decided to shoot it some. Are there any parts available if needed. It is a beautiful rifle that shoots great. Thanks, Reggie
