I can't figure why but an ebayer elected to scrap a few Mowrey rifles. I managed to get brass receiver frames and walnut stock sets. The forearms will accommodate a 1" barrel. They need hammers, triggers, tumblers, side plates and springs.... guards and then some. This ought to be a hoot.

Almost like rebuilding a '38 Packard from a single muffler bearing. You must know what you need, but I'd be singing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". Brave new project. Good luck and keep us posted. SW

Ideally I'll find a factory hammer that's close. The tumblers a lathe job and I'll do a coil spring similar to cva's little derringer lock. Trigger and spring easy. A lot of the project will be sprucing up the wood; the disassembly process was not done with kindness. 5/16 brass bar makes the side plates. It's gonna have tumbler support. Trigger guard and another butt plate. Yeah this gonna take some time.

I just hope it looks like a Mowrey when done....

Anyone know the throw of a Mowrey hammer?

Usually those ebay sellers strip complete guns and sell piece by piece. Keep watching for the other parts.

I rebuilt the entire innards in mine. I used small boys Steven’s single shot illustration in Dehaas book for the example. Cave man simple. I’ll pull the plate and post a pix of it tomorrow when I’m down in the shop tomorrow. It was my first muzzleloader and cost me 90 bucks.

Rebarreled it as well. All in all, a good feeling offhand rig when you’re done. I believe you’ll like it.

Outstanding...it's about what I planned on. Is that tumbler modified or something else?
It’s just lathe turned (Prolly 4130 or maybe drill rod, I forget). Left a bit of a boss on the outside to be supported with the cover plate. Prolly scratched it on paper somewhere but Lord, it’s been maybe 20 years ago in my bean pan.

"Cave man simple", baloney Taevers. You amaze ! Lathes and metal.....like alchemy to me. Very cool. SW

I'm gonna build my tumblers like RH McCrory repair method 2. You turn your shaft then pin the tumbler at the proper clock. I have to make 3 sets. Just waiting for the 3rd receiver. There's enough variation between the pair on hand...I figure I'l ream them all identical. I think a cva bobcat (large) hammer is close enough to bend to the right throw.

Taevers...have you ever ground a "Vertical Shear Tool" bit for lathe work?

Yes I have. I use one ground of HHS often. They work really well for finishing super smooth surfaces on both cold and hot roll shafting.

I own the original that Bill Mowrey used to make his copy. That’s now 61 years ago! My, time has given me the slip like a lot of whitetails have!

I saw a picture you shared of your rifle in a muzzleblast magazine ( I think) years ago. You also wrote about the history behind it. I first saw one in Sam Falelas black powder handbook when I was just getting started. As soon as I saw one at a store, I jumped on it. It’s been a goody.

I saw those parts pop up. I was hoping for a spare spring.
