I have one my brother built from a Mowrey kit that is almost identical to the OP’s, brass forearm and all. Mine is also a .58. The barrel flat on mine is marked “8”. My brother would have bought and built it in the mid to late 1970s. I don’t know how Mowrey numbered their kit.
 
I bought my Mowrey in 2013 cost $400 U.S. It is a steel frame 50 caliber made in Texas. The funny thing about it is the name is spelled Mowry. Yes it is a very accurate rifle the target is offhand at 32 yards, when I first got it and was sighting it in for me. Wouldn't sell it, Even though I don't hunt any longer it took some game for me.

The Mowry owners prayer.
"Dear Lord, as i venture forth to fire this wonderful rifle, please put your protective hand on the main spring, that it returns from this outing all in one piece."
Seems I've heard Johnathan Browning Mountain Rifle owners say the same prayer.
I'd still like one in .54 with iron hardware.
 
After a 2 year hiatus, this Mowrey thread has come back to life, so I'll add a bit. The 1972 issue of Black Powder Gun Digest has an interesting 6 page article on this gun. Although primarily focused on loading and shooting performance, it does contain some good insight into the Olney, Texas operation. "Each gun... is a semi-custom job, with many processes in its manufacture being done partially or completely by hand .... each stock receives 10 coats of hand rubbed oil finish". Back then the cost was $149.50, "For $20 bucks more, a presentation model of the gun featuring a hand-rubbed northern maple stock and furniture made of bronwite - having an appearance similar to nickel silver - is available"
 
The lettering for Texas is very light and difficult to see but keep looking. Just purchased one for under 500 and still in the process of getting to know it's abilities at the range. Very cool and unique rifle!

Hi I look forward to reading that article I seem to have a affinity for this model now starting with obtaining a centennial barrel by chance then trying to find parts to go with it which has led to the purchase of a brass 50 cal and coming soon a short gun which I'll use with the barrel to interchange them if I can unscrew the shotgun barrel from the reciever. So I'm just plain absorbed with them now!
 
Many years ago I had a Mowrey 12 gauge shotgun. It was a kicker with that that narrow curved brass buttplate. Have seen a few of their rifles but that was the only smoothbore.
 
I bought one when they first came out. It had a terrible trigger! NO HELP FROM THE DEALER OR MANUFACTURE! I sold it and never bought another one. My next was a Thompson Center Hawken and I had it for 10 years!
 
Hello all, I picked this up off of GB a couple months ago for $600. so, I figured I would share it with you.

It is .58 cal. with SN- 7238, anyone know if this is a Texas Rifle?
I swapped out the factory sights for some a little less primitive. I have not taken it to the range yet but hope to sometime this year.
