I found some RWS brand musket caps (RWS #1081 F/L if I remember correctly, F/L for Flange/Less?)that do not have the flange around the edge. In other words these look like a extra extra large percussion cap instead of a tiny top hat.
Have any of you used this style on your guns that have musket nipples? Anything different to report if you did??
These cost about 1/2 of what they were asking for the musket caps with flanges - RWS #1081, I bought 200 of them and left another 200 on the shelf for someone else.
Thanks!

I bought 1000 RWS flangeless musket caps on line for my 58 caliber Zouave. Finally stopped using them as maybe half actually worked. Bought some flanged ones and they work fine. Not sure why the flangeless won't work. They fit the nipple just fine.

I haven't seen the RWS flangeless caps but have used some older Navy Arms flangeless ones that I found at a gunshow. Don't know who actually made them but they worked fine for me. So long as they fit the nipple correctly they should work as well as the flanged ones I would think.

btech, wonder if the ones you got were defective in some way? a properly fitting cap should work, flanges or not.

I bought a tin of "wingless" musket caps long, long ago, because I didn't realize that that type existed. As I recall, they shot just fine but were harder to handle, esp with a bit of lube (we used crisco back then) on the fingers. Dispose of them properly by shooting them up.

I use the RWS 1081fl musket caps for hunting as they don't seem to get nocked off the nipple as easy as winged caps. I've had mine for years and they still work perfectly fine.
