I have been told recently I would do well to use "musket powder" in my Bess. This is thought to correspond to 1f powder.I have been using 2f Goex. What say ye Gentlemen? Would there be any advantage to switch powders?Best regards,J.A.

Fg powder does produce less chamber pressure than does FFg. However, it also produces less velocity. Fg is different than Musket Powder, I am told. I don't know if Musket Powder, or Cannon Powder is regularly available here from Goex. It might be worth giving the company a call on their 800 number. See the links here, at the top of the Index page, down under Member Resources.

I don't think so I use 1 1/2 F in my Ctg. guns Sharps. I use the 1 1/2 F Swiss very expensive.
In the old loading books of 100 yrs ago this grade was called canon grade.

I use 2F and 3F Wano in my .62 smooth gun. I use more 3F any more its handy when going to shoots one powder for all my long arms and pistols.

I use 2F in my Bess with good results. I think we had a conversation here that 2F today is what they used to call Musket powder in the 1860's. I don't know anyone that uses 1F in a musket today.

Well you do now! All I use in my big muskets is Fg. Pressure is an issue for me.

I use FFg for my smaller muzzleloaders including my .32.

I use 80 gr. 3-f in my Officers Bess, works great. From what I was told by Alice at Winchester Suttler 2-f was cannon priming powder and 3-f was musket powder.

The difference is what your guns like to shoot ,have used 3fg in muskets to great success, as well a the big 1fg also to success in loads for turkey hunting in my smooth bore it performes best with it ,another performs best out of my pedersoli Indian gun with 2fg and balls, my tulle prefes 60 grains 3gf with both shot and ball so go figuar. kjg :hatsoff:

Gentlemen, thank you all for your posts.I have never been dissatisfied with the performance 2f has provided.I'll not be out for a tin of 1f unless I come by one. Thanks again, best regards,J.A.
