Most of us use muzzle guards at the range, some use them in the woods. I only have muzzle guards on metal rods but I do clean wooden ramrods thoroughly when I clean the rifle.
There is SOME guaranteed wear of the rifling/muzzle from use; it's simply impossible to use something without wear taking place. Skinning a deer will dull a good knife blade. IMHO it would take a huge amount of shooting to wear out even a gun (well cared for) with shallow rifling. They will likely fail in some other area before a modern steel bore actually wears out.
