MuzzleBlast Rod Abrasive Test

Most of us use muzzle guards at the range, some use them in the woods. I only have muzzle guards on metal rods but I do clean wooden ramrods thoroughly when I clean the rifle.

There is SOME guaranteed wear of the rifling/muzzle from use; it's simply impossible to use something without wear taking place. Skinning a deer will dull a good knife blade. IMHO it would take a huge amount of shooting to wear out even a gun (well cared for) with shallow rifling. They will likely fail in some other area before a modern steel bore actually wears out.

Thats some test, but in order to defend my use of a stainless steel range, cleaning rod I will ask this one Question. How about any heat build up? 30,000 strokes in 2 hours with a 7 inch rod? do you think this might have caused the wear on the barrel? I do use a brass muzzle protector.

I don't believe you have to "defend" your use of stainless steel. SS is smooth and not prone to gathering grit. Plus with a muzzle guard it never touches the bore. I use a SS rod on the range with some of my rifles.

I use a steel rod in my centerfires. But I only use wood for my muzzleloaders (though T/C has ssome kind if epoxy impregnation or some such).

The key is to use care no matter what material your rod is. Wipe it off, I lay my guns down to clean and use my fingertips as a rod guide and wiper, and if you don't wipe between shots you reduce muzzle wear by 50 to 75%. (That ought to stir it back up!)

I swear I saw here about 3-5 months ago pictures where someone sawed on the corner of a barrel flat with the same types of ramrods. The results were quite different. In the test I saw the fiberglass sawed quite a notch, the stainless was about the same as hickory.
Of course this new test is more as the rods are normally used; not sawing across an edge.
I've given up on the forum search function. No matter how exacting I make the search terms I get a full 500 results to pick through.
