hey everyone I don't know if anyone has tried this, I have a supply of those blue paper towels they sell in the automotive dept. at most stores. I took and cut a sheet into 1 1/2" to 2" squares and used them to clean the bore of my flinter and percussion guns they hold up great and are a lot cheaper then store bought patches. shoot straight and God bless.

Note the OP stated Blue Paper towels. They're pretty tough but won't stand up to the washer. I seem to have a never ending supply of old T shirts that work great for cleaning.

I bought a flannel sheet from Goodwill years ago for cleaning patches. Use them, wash them, reuse them. Even cheaper than paper towels and far cheaper than store-bought patches.

Blue paper towels, wash and re-use cleaning patches? How frugal can you get? :hmm: About 3 or 4 years ago I was in Wally World and saw a roll of cotton flannel on the sale table and bought it. I think there may have been 3 yards of flannel and I paid something like $1.98 per yard for it. I am still using it to make cleaning patches. It's darned good stuff and, at that price, I have the luxury of just using them and tossing them. Besides, I cannot imagine what mama :cursing: might do if I tossed a mesh bag of used cleaning patches into her nice clean washer but I don't think it would be pretty. :shake: :haha:

Never thought about that. But I have wondered how they got along without toilet paper. I have tried leaves and it made my thoughts about the lack of toilet paper even more vivid. Anyone who has never tried leaves as a substitute for toilet paper needs to try them just once as a learning tool. But be sure you are near a source of water for washing up. You will need it. I might add that there is just nothing quite like walking around with crunchy bits of leaf stuck in your nether reagions. Just sayin'... Oh, and be absolutely sure of what kind of leaf you are using. Poison ivy or poison oak leaves are nothing like Charmin. Oh, and stinging nettle.....avoid that one, too. Try to live like a mountain man? Naw, I love my Charmin too much.

Thanks Billnpatti for that "funny" tid-bit - it sure did put a big smile on my face   .

Here's frugal: For cap & ball revolver, I make wads to put between ball & powder. A lot of folks use the felt wads, which fork fine & some even make their own.
I use a 1/2 sheet of double ply TP with a dab of stiff grease folded inside. It's thick enough to properly compress the powder for uniform accuracy, lubes the bore enough without leaving excess residue to trap powder soot & residue, AND one of the jumbo rolls will last a lifetime.

Plus, should the urge hit, I've got a roll of TP at hand for unscheduled stops.

Just try wiping with one of those little felt wads ...

If one were to carry TP with a wad of lube in it and made the mistake of grabbing the wrong piece of TP for your woods visit, you certainly would "lube your bore" as you put it. One would be well advised to take care when going afield with lubed TP.

Got me thinking. I wonder how Preparation H would do as a patch lube? Would it shrink my groups?

Preparation H is available in several formulations including water and petroleum lubes, as well as a suppository delivery method. The last, of course, would be used in suppository guns.

Don't go there. I tried it in my .40 cal rifle and it shrunk it down to a .36 cal and my PRBs wouldn't fit.

If the Preparation H does not reduce your caliber you will have to use thicker patch material due to ball shrinkage.

Actors have for ears used Prep H on their faces to make wrinkles disappear for short times.

Many offf-label uses for this fine product.

This is a refreshing change from some of the HC/PC threads that get started on the forums. You knuckleheads elavated my mood and made me smile! :haha:
