muzzleloader help

I have a japanese muzzleloader that my grandpa got out of a cave along with a katana on Iwo Jima in WWII and i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what exactly it is and how old it is or any information whatsoever could be helpful.

I'm some what of a newb here, but I would think your best bet is to have this professionally appraised.

Sounds like you have a very interesting muzzleloader. I can't wait to see the pics.

It would be better if the pictures could be posted on Photobucket (which is free). Then we all could see them.

WOW, nice pics of a nice old gun.

When I was a young boy, an older gentleman friend of the family had a gun that looked very similar to that one, except it was painted dark blue iirc, and it was a matchlock. Don't know anything more about it than that except that he said it was Chinese.

I would like to help but I don't have anything that covers Japanese guns into the percussion era.

I wonder what a old muzzleloader was doing in a war zone like Iwo Jima?
You don't suppose some Japanese officer was as big a nut on muzzleloading as we are, do you?

well my grandpa told me he found 5 muzzleloaders each with different designs on them and 5 katanas each with different markings on them but they seemed to pair up with eachother, ex. katana-muzzleloader, but he gave the other ones to his friends but i was looking at the markings and i started to wonder if maybe they were family rifles and katanas

 

Do you have any photos of the sword? Would be interesting to see if there is a family crest anywhere on the fittings as sometimes is the case.

i wish i could get the sword pictures for you but my grandpa passed on fathers day and i dont have the sword but my uncle wants to give me the sword because im joining the Marines to follow my grandpa footsteps.

I know a lot of Japanese officers carried their ancestral katanas, often remounted for modern use, but I've never heard of the family muzzle loader being hauled into a modern combat zone.
