OK,
Just say that I have a muzzleloader and I want to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. What would be the best way to prepare it for the long haul?I'm talking 60 or 70 Years maybe longer.Where would the best place be to store it?Somewhere air tight?I'm guessing completely coating all metals with some type of heavy grease would do_Opinions?

I would actually take it apart, and pack all metal in rifle or bearing grease, then wrap it in plastic. You do not want to wrap, or store with anything that can harbor moister.

This should last indefinitely!

You could also fill the barrel with grease, and coat the outside, and get plastic rifle storage bag to put it in!

Use cosmoline to protect the metal.
Or just send it to me. I'll take good care of it for you.

I'm wondering about the wood but I suppose as long as it's kept dry that should be good enough.

Oil it good and then put it in one of those Seal-A-Meal vaccum bags. With no air in it, no rust can form, and the wood should last indefinately in one.

just curious,,,if you put your fired rifle in an air tight bag would it rust or would it be ready to shoot when you take it out,, if this worked your gun wouldnt need cleaned any more, just swab at the end of a shoot?????

Go get a 6 inch PVC pipe as long as you barrel.
Get 2 end caps.
MCK or acitone based glue.

glue one end of the cap on yer pipe.
add all yer metal parts.
Full with motor oil, or differental oil
glue other cap on.
seal a meal yer stock, put in seperate tupe.

Not sure i would want to put one away dirty. The makings for problems are already there. May or may not rust, but why chance it. Just clean it a seal it.
