Today was day 3 of IL 2nd gun season. I was feeling a little ill over missing a doe yesterday, about a 60 yard freehand shot. This morning at daylight, I saw a nice 8-pointer, woulda been a good one to break in the .54 GPR on, but a shot just wouldn't present itself. It rained the rest of the day. This afternoon, still raining, I sat half-way down a steep holler, waiting for activity at the bottom. As it was getting late I saw a doe almost 1/4 mile away, on the other side of the canyon, was sure it would parallel the creek rather than take the steep grade head on. Instead, she crossed the creek, walked right through the briars, and walked straight up the rocky grade headed for me. I dropped her in her tracks at 25 yards. 1st roundball kill :) Proudest I've been of a doe since I shot my very first deer 16 years ago. I'm going back out for another in the morning.

That's fantastic...I know you're flyin' high...congratulations!

Did you notice a little up-tick in your heart rate as she was closing on your position?

Well done, Gametracker! Making meat the old fashioned way is good for your soul. You'll find the meat tastes sweeter as well. Good luck on your next one. :hatsoff:

What county do you hunt? I hunt in Fayette.
Did you use a muzzleloader tag or regular season tag?
I got a 6 pt. opening day of first season. He walked right in to me and was within 20 yards to my side when I shot.
I got a doe on Thursday morning at 15 yards. She walked right at me and turned broadside.
I still have my muzzleloader tag left.
I wasn't raining this morning, but it sure was cold and windy. I couldn't go out this afternoon, I had to help my Mom move. :cursing:
Last year was the first time I got a deer with a muzzleloader. It took 2 years, but it was worth the wait. I'll never take a shotgun, again.
Congrats on your first kill with the muzzleloader. You'll never forget it. :hatsoff:

I'm in Pope County. And, yes, I still have ML tag for next weekend  Good luck fillin' yours!

Congratulations on your first deer with the GPR!

If I remember right, we both bought our GPRs at the same time, with the same initial problems. Right now it is firearms season here in Maryland, but I hope to have the opportunity to take my GPR out for a doe sometime next week.

Good success to you on your hunt tomorrow!

Steve

Gametracker,

I can still remember the feeling
of my first PRB harvest and its great.

Pope county? You're way down there.
From what I've read, Pope has alot of deer. 1st season harvest is almost the same as Fayette.
Hardly anyone saw much during 2nd season around here. I guess the deer heard it was deer season.
Congrats again on your 1st deer with the roundball.

I hunt Pope County also, just East of Delwood. I have hunted there for 25+ years. Lots of public land.
