I do not have a stock to use for the demo so I used a piece of cedar. The burn area does spread more on the cedar than on a hardwood stock but the method is the same. The cedar sample looks like crap but the hardwood will look much better Trust Me!
  1. Remove finish from your stock
  2. Cut foil into strips
  3. roll foil into a rope
  4. wrap stock with foil rope using pins to hold it
  5. torch the stock in the area the foil isnt covering
  6. sand stock and apply stain and Tru Oil finish

I know someone who wrapped a stock with common green Cannon Fuse, and lit it. Don't know how well it came out, but I'd try it on a ramrod just for fun!
As an apprentice in the 60's I worked with a man heavily into the gun interests. His father had made a percussion long gun that had a similarly, as I remember it, striped stock. His tale was that the old man wrapped the stock with a twisted linen kerosene soaked rope and set that on fire to produce the stripe.

I have tried several methods over the years ( hot iron, burning rope, torch) and in my opinion the foil rope always makes the best stripe pattern. I think some even use a feather and dye to make stripes. I might do another rifle this fall if I can find a good deal on another donor gun.
