My Bowie from Runewolf1973

@Runewolf1973 told me it would look even better in person, and it does.

On the outside of the shipping box was written "Contains Cutlery". When I opened the box, as my chin was dropping to the floor, I heard myself blurt out "why yes it does". Now that's a knife. [and that's a 16" laptop] I'm pretty sure I said before I wasn't into knives- not sure that's accurate any more.

Yeah, that says it - work of art!

I know what the price was having seen the thread in the marketplace. I love knives, but was a little shocked that anyone would ask that much - or anyone would pay that much.

In another thread someone mentioned Bowie knives sold in 1830 for $5-20 dollars. Google's inflation calculator said $20 back then equals $600 now.

Perhaps I'm the one who's out-of-date?

More like out of touch. There are those who desire and appreciate superior quality and workmanship and willingly pay for it. For a handmade well executed Bowie this knife was under priced. You could always buy a Pakistani knife if your only requirement is cheap.

My Uncle and I had a similar conversation about pricing leather work, horn work and knives. He made custom knives before he got sick with a lung disease. He said that knife making, and others, is a hobby of love because you only get paid about $2 to $3 an hour, and then folks do not want to pay you because they have no concept of the time you’ve invested in your art. He said that he appreciated the fact that his name was on a piece of art that would last for generations.

EVERY time I purchase something from one of the talented artisans here and elsewhere I want to tell them they aren’t charging enough. But I know that they know that. They have their reasons for charging what they do, and I respect that. I just want them to know that if they feel like they need to quit so they can earn a living elsewhere, and they still love doing their art, raise their prices first. They’ll loose some business but make up that money with the clients who will pay the higher price, and have more time to play or do even more art.

Yes, one of a matching pair. Made in France 1760 ca, 50 cal smoothbore.
