And don't inlet until your wood is about 1/16" or so from its' final dimension. that keeps you from having to dig too deep of a straight channel, and it's easy to make the opening too big in that case.

The trick is, don't let anyone cut a mortise for anything. Do it yourself and you can end up with a fit with absolutely no gaps anywhere between the wood and the metal.
