I bought a used T/C Hawken last week in .50 cal flintlock. I never shot a muzzleloader before. Well, I got to shoot it today for the first time. I was nervous at first, just hoping it would go BOOM. My first load went fine. I shot about 15 roundballs today at a 50 yd target. My last three shots were touching each other inside 2" about 2" high from the offhand position. I am satisfied my rifle shoots well. I was using 70 gr of 3f and a touch of 4f in the pan.
I am telling you all this because I learned EVERYTHING from reading the posts on this forum and felt confident I can do this. I do not even know anyone who shoots flintlocks. I want to thank you all for giving me, a total pilgrim, the knowledge to be excited about muzzleloaders.

That is great! The first shoot is memorable and to shoot as well as you did is even BETTER!

Isn't it amazing how accurate these round ball throwers are?!

Glad to hear you had a good experience and that is very good shooting for the first time out! Remember you can tweak the load here and there to bring out the rifles full potential in accuracy but if your shooting that kind of group consistently offhand at 50 yds I'd say your pretty much there! Settle on a load and then adjust your point of impact.

That's great news. Good shooting too! They're addictive suckers aren't they?

I've shot percussion guns for decades but only got my first flinter a little over a year ago. The folks here made it easy for me too. Glad you found them helpful too. :hatsoff:

Congratulation on that purchase, and on your performance. Thank you for the nice comments about this forum. There are fine group of gentlemen here who want only to help make this sport grow. The best way we know how to do that here is to spread good information to new members, and help them avoid a lot of mistakes we all made when we didn't know anything, and didn't KNOW we didn't know anything! I am now so glad that I never kept a written record of all the screw-ups I made learning all this. It would truly be painful reading. :shocked2: :rotf:

Good job, you have taken the first step, enjoy the journey.

Now you need to find some folks to shoot and share with. That will kick it up another notch. I'd recommend looking up the closest NMLRA club(http://www.nmlra.org/).

Rich,
Welcome to the world of muzzleloading and welcome to the forum!

We're all glad you're here and glad you gained the knowledge and confidence you needed to successfully shoot your flintlock.

WARNING...Muzzleloading is an addictive drug and you are now hooked!

Stick around. We look forward to hearing your success stories yet to come.

My first Black Powder experience?

Two things happened; i burned off my right eyebrow, and i fell in love. :shocked2:

T/C .54, 28"bbl.L&R replacement lock.

Ah yas! Nothing like getting all sooty and smelly, and taking the reeking, filthy rifle back home in triumph to give it a good cleaning.
THAT'S living.

Welcome to the forum!
Not many would have the nerve, to go right to a flinter  You picked a good name to start with too! T/C has a great rep, and as a production rifle, are second to none IMHO!
