somehow I think the world feels a bit better when its you doin it,an not me! :shocked2: ........... :rotf:

Nice work Lenn! Seems you just aren't afraid to tackle much. Now,in the future, I have heard that hatchets make good 'hawks too, and don't require as much work. Of course you don't get the poll on the head then. Emery

Thanks Curtis and Emery, yep i`ve seen those too but wanted to try the ball peen way. I think the next one which will be bigger will have a spike on it.

Nice job. Cabin fever's great. I heard they use plow points to make them to. Dilly

Hey Pitchy, I think I saw this thing somewhere else! Did you re -temper the blade part? I did not on mine and it sure is sharp, also seems to hold up pretty good without tempering.I'm thinking its just quality steel or I just got lucky once!

I like that looks real good I may have missed it but what size was the hammer head you started with ?

Thanks I believe it was an 8 ounce. :)

Thanks Davy and James. :)

Stumblin Wolf, i`m sure it`s the wrong way but for my use it has always worked for me.
At red heat put the edge in snow or ice to harden it a little and let the rest cool on its own. Spmetimes i use oil.
Is that what you were asking? :hmm: :)

Also i`m sure I put the handle on backwards was in a hurry. It should e tapered the whole length and go through the other way.

I want to say the reason I post the step by step pics is to show the basic things ya need and a place to start for those that haven`t forged before. I`m not doing it to show off and my way isn`t the only way i`m far from a expert at blacksmithing.
Criticism is always welcome. :v

I made up a new handle that goes through the hawk in the right direction. Looks a little better don`t ya think?
