My Latest (Hey! And my first!) scratchbuild. My takeoff of a Southern mountain rifle. .50 cal Green Mountain barrel, old CVA lock, spalted Maple stock. Only the lock and barrel were purchased, all the rest of the iron furniture were forged in my shop. No power tools were used except a drill for the vent, tang bolt hole, and barrel lug holes. Hand tools used for everything else. Aqua Fortis and linseed oil finish. Great shooter right off the bench. It's still a work in progress, haven't made up my mind if it gets an iron patch box or just a tallow hole.

Told ya it was still in progress, finally found slot head #10 wood screws, burned the zinc off and heat treated them. The trigger didn't have a return spring and would swing forward when the muzzle was down. Since installed a paper clip return spring and the trigger now resides about an 1-1/4" back from the front return of the gaurd.

So far so good. These guys can be tough. But most of them know their business. I like the barrel browning. What about the sideplate, hammer and trigger?

Keep up the good work and I hope she is a shooter. :applause:

I think I'll try the mustard treatment on the lock and parts, probably leave the trigger alone and just let it weather naturally from finger acids...by the way, the barrel is done in stale urine, Hacker Martin style.

It looks like you're on the right track. I'm not so sure you need that kick stand though. :blah: :rotf:

How is that spalted maple to work with? I got a piece on evilbay. Also have a green mountain barrel. Now you got the wheels spinning up here.

Streetsniper, I think I got the sister to your piece from ebay about 6-7 weeks ago. My piece was great and worked like normal Maple, was really pretty with the spalting. As I said, I finished with nitric acid and it pretty well masked most of that beautiful spalting. It looks like a plain Maple stock now, so if you give it a go, you migh opt foe a lighter stain to show off the spalting.

I thought that was a VERY overbuilt set of bipods. Now if you could only replace the coil return spring with a V spring... :surrender: :haha:

Man, it's hard enough to get that 700# bike up on the centerstand with that puny coil spring, much less a sho-nuff v-spring

Ya have your "hawg" guns...and ya have your Harley "hawgs". Trick is to pick the right one for the job at hand.
