My New Mortar

My latest acquisition, a golf ball mortar. Artillery I can shoot in my driveway. On occasion a group will form an ad hoc golf ball mortar match at a regional skirmish, looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Reminds me of making tennis ball cannons as a kid using lighter fluid instead of BP.

I'll have to come up with a special load to get out of sand traps.
My wife has vetoed the idea of using the dog's pool as a target.

I have a few gb mortars. One I made on a little lathe from a design by Douglas Dickens.

I made one over Covid lockdown. Started with 3” bar stock of 4140. Crude copy of Coehorn mortor. Shoots golf balls from 50 to approximately 500 yds depending on the powder charge. Wadding makes a big difference in golf ball distance.

Beautiful job. It doesn’t look at all crude to me.
Note: wadding does increase distance. It also increases pressure.
Search for Max Load to find a thread started by Grottorian in 2007. Good info.
