Winter time is for projects. I made a couple of bags that are much more PC and the styles were based on late 18th century or early 19th century examples I found in books. The bag on the left is my new haversack. The body is made from coarse linen, and it's lined with cotton canvas for strength, has a hemp strap and leather flap. The button is also covered in the same linen to be correct. The bag on the right is the new shooting pouch I was working on in the Bag helper thread. The bag has a hair-on flap over a cow hide body. There are two pockets sewn to the back of the bag inside, and it too has a hemp strap that is adjustable with the brass buckle. Both bags were completely hand sewn with linen thread and I used only materials in their construction that would have been used in the 18th century. All hemp and linen were dyed with walnut hulls to give them a woodsy color. I'm pretty proud of my handiwork if I say so myself. The URL to see the bags is at: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/OhioRusty/000_0061.jpg

I learned alot making them, and alot about my abilities to make my own gear. These will pass a juried event for sure !!

Nice work! :hatsoff:

Where did you get the hemp strap? I have had a hard time finding it locally and haven't check the web yet.

The stuff you call hemp strap isnt that the same stuff as chair webbing, in old chairs etc it was used to brace seats.
I found a roll in my local garden supply (hardware stor) here in tassie, was only cheap about 50c aust per metre

Depends on the material. Much of that webbing is made of cotton or sometimes linen. Hemp is the fibre of cannabis sativa, indica, or ruderalis.
