My S.M. Rifle

Be nice, this is my second build. 40cal,7/8",42" long G.M. barrel, deluxe Siler lock. I made all the furniture except the buttplate.

Looks like you did a fair job, not sure whats going on with the toe plate, brass screws? Love the color of the gun though. :thumbsup:

Those are copper "nails" I made out of a piece of ground wire. Probably won't do it again but something I wanted to play with. Since I don't plan on ever selling this rifle I decided to experiment a little.

Hey, the rear sight is too close for me also, man I hate getting old. :rotf: My little boy out to be able to shoot it, at least till he turns forty or so. I never knew what you guys were talking about when ya'll say the rear sights are too close. Then I had to get bifocals. Boy, now I understand.

These sights don't give me that much trouble, yet. Oh well it just gives me an excuse to build another rifle. :grin:

Actually you'll find old guns with more than one dove tail for rear site cut into them. So when the time comes, recut aqnd place a filler in the first one. :thumbsup:

I used Laurel Mt. Forge stains. The first coat was cherry followed by Lancaster maple. Finished with their sealer and stock finish and then dulled out with some BLO and steel wool. Thanks for the compliments. :hatsoff:

Got to agree with the others, rear sight is way to far back, and that is beautiful piece of wood with nice grain and excellent color. I especially like the wooden patch box. I have always been a fan of wood boxes with their simple clean lines as oppossed to what to me are over done "gaudy" metal patch boxes.

My only real critisim is why 40 caliber? Too big for small game, too small for the big stuff...

I really like it. If you dont intend on selling it you can always just give it to me I would be proud to take such a fine rifle. I dont have a 40cal. It really looks great you done goood.

That rifle looks just fine to me. And you can put the sight where ever you need it to be. It can always be moved. And .40 caliber is legal for deer here in Wisconsin as well as other States, I'm sure. Emery
