Darn it, to my wife's dismay, I've made another horn. (Wife would prefer I make the living room finished). A priming horn this time out of deer antler from my first deer taken on opening morning when I was 14 years old. The 5 point rack was never much to look at, so I didn't have a problem cutting into it. Now I have something more useful than a deer skull that sits in my closet.

Here are my first two horns. One for me and one I gave to my friend Scott.

Nice work ! The top one is very simular to one I just made today for a priming horn. Only I put the priming valve on the small point and a filling plug on the larger section where I cut it off the main beam. :idunno:

Really nice looking craftsmanship...I'm not a powder horn user so to me, the antler tip primer has more of a draw...have always used some sort of small priming horn or antler tip primer with the 3grn plunger dispensers like that.
That one made from your first buck should be special.

These show the type filler plug mine have.

They look great, now you can start making your hunting horn. I was at a gun auction and they were auctioning off a powder horn. It was a nice piece of horn and I won it for about ten bucks. It was handed to me and I blew a loud bullish call out of it and got a good laugh from the crowd. They are pretty fun when putting on drives during blackpowder season...keep up the good work....

And I reply 3 months later...I use brown Rit dye with a touch of black Rit. Mix with water and boil, place horn tip in boiling dye for 15-20 min. Scrape excess off main horn body. Can find Rit dye in housewares or fabric mending section of grocery or dept stores.

I sure wish you lived close to me, maybe some of that talent would rub off.
Great stuff,
David
