So just thin the edges. Would never thought of that
yes. thin from the center line out to each side to keep it smooth and even . maybe look at some pics of finished rifles to get an idea.

I can do that with an angle grinder and finish off with orbital sander, then hand sand for polishing then tap in place. I like this idea vs the puddy fill idea.

Very likely a Pedersoli rocky mountain hawken, or some similar cousin to it from the mid-80s.
Just a general comment as you're sanding or working the stock to not round off the edges too much. Lock panels and top of the barrel channel (IMHO) look best if they have some crispness to their edge and the whole thing doesn't look smooth.

Yep! You can ruin a piece so fast with power tools. Been there, done that, and have the scrap to prove it.easy with the power tools.
Invest in a building book. I like Alexander's "Gunsmith of Grenville County" best of the four I own, but Blevins and others out there are very good too. The archives here are a terrific, free resource too.

Don’t jinx me now, but I love a good challenge. Slow and steady. I’ll feather out from center, once started, I’m committed and there is no replacement. All the more reason not to but, I’m going to give it a try.

Ok, I ordered the Greenville County book to get me started. Over last ten years I’ve been purchasing books on Muzzle loaders, but none are gunsmith types. I’ve been putting all this off till now. I really appreciate the info this forum so easily shares. Funny side note. Ten minutes or so before you shared this, I ordered front sights from Track of the Wolf. The book is from them also. Just called and added to order.
Most book stores don't stock these specialized books. They will be found at muzzleloader suppliers such as Track of the Wolf or Muzzleloaders' Building Supplies. The Amazon book store will have copies in stock.

The previous owner referenced it as a Hawken. Don’t know if he was talking in general or specifics, but all good info trying to figure this out. Thanks

Yes, I just removed the barrel from the stock on mine and it has the exact same proof marks as yours, but date code of AM for 1984 so one year before yours, and exact same rear sight, serial number 6921.
Did you get a nose cap and wedge escutcheons with it? If so are they iron or silver? If silver my money is on a Western Arms or Allen F.A. kit from 1985-ish.
