Thank you, @Mulebrain . I am small by today’s standards and even 14” is a stretch for me. I’m afraid that one is longer than I can handle.

That is a very nice looking rifle at a very attractive price, though, and some taller fellow will be mighty pleased with it!

What kind of rifling does this have? My other navy arms has 3 groove shallow rifling for a Minnie style bullet.

Also what twist rate is is? What is the barrel measurement across the flats?

Val Forgett also has his Hawken bored in 58cal. He famously took it as his "Heavy Rifle" to Africa, his back up was a Buffalo Hunter in 58.

He worked up MASSIVE powder loads behind a 610gr minie, i believe later called the Stake Buster minie.

He took a Hippp, Elephant, Lion, Zebra, and more with muzzleloading rifles. I love reading the story, in Lymans Black Powder Manual.

I am new to black powder and this forum. I like this rifle and I am wondering if it would be a good choice as a first musket? So far I only own an 1851 Navy revolver but I have shot several muskets.
