SOLD NEAT Antique .40 Chunk Gun

SALE PENDING This CHUNK GUN was built by Pennsylvania Rifle Works, probably 1850s-1860s. It has a 46.5" barrel with smooth patina finish and some typical corrosion near nipple. Looks to be about .40 cal. bore near muzzle looks good. No bore light small enough. But patches move smoothly and bore was greased. Has a newish nipple, making me think it has been shot in modern times. The Cherry wood stock is overall very good for an antique. Has the ubiquitous crack at toe (looks recent) and some small stress cracks behind breech. Looks like it could be a good shooter. $650 shipped.

.985 at breech and .965 at muzzle. Yes, triggers function as they should.

What about the lock? Dimensions do say light chunk but .40 caliber is pretty small for chunk shooting.

Chunk shooting is done typically at 60 yards. You shoot from a prone position at an X target with the muzzle resting on a "chunk". Matches range fro 3 to 10 shots, 1 shot at each target. Scoring is done by measuring from the X to the center of the ball hole and the adding all measurements which is a "string" measure. Short string wins.

Also, from my understanding, “chunk guns” are basically the same as traditional guns, except they are often longer and have heavier weight barrels, and they are typically shot as Mark Herman has stated, rested on a log or “chunk.”

All I can say, you would need to have really strong arms to shoot this offhand. I still think it would qualify as a Chunk Gun. Not sure bore would matter.
