Saw a reprint of the book for sale at a local shop. and I almost compulsively bought it but the $40 asking price stopped me cold.

1. I figure it is worth having due to the depths of insight Roberts had.
3.The price seemed outrageous.

Any leads for a cheaper price would be appreciated

And to the moderator. Thought this request may belong here since it is a reference book for our firearms more than "media"

You need to reconsider the price or prepare to be patient. There are no used copies on the major booksearch sites (bookfinder.com incorporates many search sites including abebooks.com) at the present. :(

I bought my copy used probably thru amazon. Don't remember the price, but I'm sure it was cheaper than $40.00................watch yer top knot........

I just did a bookfinder.com search on "Ned Roberts" and came up with several copies ranging from 16.00 up. Interestingly, the cheap one is also a 1947 edition which should be printed on heavy coated paper and has much clearer illustrations than the later, soft paper offset reprints. Its probably the 3rd edition - it came out in 1940, 1944 and 1947. I have the 1944 edition which is much nicer than my reprint. If I didn't already have an early edition, I'd have bought it on the spot.

However, something to keep in mind with gun books... None of them were printed in huge editions and the ones that are out of print often demand much more than $40. Roberts book is very good where he is relating events he personally witnessed. It it much less reliable when he gets into "lore" and stories related to him when young. He wasn't a historian and doesn't seem to have had any really critical judgment where "old time stories" are concerned. That wasn't unusual when he was writing and isn't unusual with gun writers today who very frequently repeat erroneous information simply because its the way they always heard it.

I think they can be found for considerably less. It is a great book for anyone interested in paper patch bullets and slug guns. When my friend, Greenmountainboy was married I performed the ceremony and we used "The Caplock Rifle" as the sacred text. :haha:

This book is a bargain at any price. Ned Roberts was THERE. I about wore out the library's copy and found one of the older Stackpole versions and snarfed it up. I want to go bear hunting with Ned and Uncle Alvaro, even if we have to use the G.D. caps!

Saw one at the last gun show for $3.oo but was getting powder so I forgot to get it. :shake: :barf: :shocked2:
