I picked up a CVA Mt. Rifle from a pard and the bore is in pretty bad shape. Me, being the "glass half full" kind of guy made up my mind to just have it bored out and make a 45-47cal smooth bore out of it. It'll be handier that way anyhow and I can still use it like a smooth rifle since it'll have sights and all. Anyway, I need a decent gunsmith in my area(TN,GA,VA, ect.) that I can send it to in order to have it bored or reamed out. Anyone know of one? Thanks. :hmm:

Does anyone know "how" a bore is bored out?

Specifically, is it as simple as mounting the barrel in a lathe, and measuring/boring down to the top of the breech plug?

Or does it involve removeing the breechplug, which would then probably require a reblue after the work was done?

RB it can be done without removing the breechplug but I've never seen a reamer that long. One could be made up without a lot of trouble then chuck it in a lathe and start reaming. Probably have to be finish honed for a slick surface but that can be done in a lathe also.
I'm not a gunsmith - just a lowly metal fabricator. :hatsoff:

We had long drills and reamers at McMillan where I did some deep hole drilling on the 50cal barrels that were used on the M-88, 50BMG sniper rifles that were made up for the SEAL's. I'm sure that a gunsmith would have a set-up where he could put the barrel in a lathe and ream it. All I need is the rifling reamed out to make it a smooth bore. Probably not much more then a .008" cut at the most.

I bought a TC Hawken 'Cougar' to get the presentation grade stock & lock as backup parts to a couple of Cougars I have (were a special run, most parts no longer available, etc)

Anyway, it had a .45cal x 1:48" barrel on it with a light sprinkling of freckles in the bore...bore is clean and bright and actually is perfectly accurate but it's a caplock and just lays on the shelf, don't use it.

It's a 15/16" barrel...could have it bored out to a .54cal smoothbore like GM's 15/16 .54cal smoothbore...but if it's a lot of money to bore one out + UPS both ways, it probably wouldn't save anything over just buying a GM barrel in the first place...dunno

Do you know of a gunsmith or gunbuilder from somewhere around Monterey? I need a dovetail cut into a barrel to install a fixed sight and I don't trust myself to do it.

You can't "ream" a rifled bore, it must first be bored out with a piloted drill to eliminate the lands, using a drill similar to what is used to drill a barrel for a liner. Then, with a relatively smooth and consistent bore, it can be reamed glass smooth. A gunsmith would need to have quite a variety of drills and reamers to make a business of re-boring barrels, which is why not every smith can do such work.

That is also why it's less expensive to replace the barrel than have one rebored.
