I'm in need of a new barrel for my GPR l/h 54 cal. Does anyone have any ideas on where the cheapest place is to buy one? Thanks in advance. FRJ

+2 on midsouth shooters supply. Great people to do business with, prices are hard to beat too.

Thanks Guys!!!! Mid South will special order it for me so thats the way I'm going. I could also get it from Lyman but that would be another $100.00 and I would rather wait a little bit and save the money. Also let me suggest that no one use Pyrodex or hot water to clean your barrel. FRJ

Could you tell us why? I would like to know what happen.

Apparently he rusted his barrel out and blames the powder.

I respectfully disagree with the assesmentabout Pyrodex powders.

I have used Pyrodex in both my rifle and my BP revolver nearly since I bought them in 1995-6 and 1988 respectively. proper(?) cleaning after every shoot and mine never rusted.

The question mark is because when I was new to BP I treated said navy colt just like a modern revolver, cleaned with Hoppe's #9 solvent (not the BP stuff) oiled with whatever gun oil I was using at the time (Rem oil, Hope's oil or CLP) and put away. I have hundreds of rounds down both weapons, and in spite of long term storage neglect both weapons are in fine shape. I will admit the revolver is in less than new condition, but the issues it suffers are owner error and neglect, not the powder used.

In response to Sr Chief: I have 2 muzzleloaders, the 54 GPR and a 45 custom. The 45 has never had anything but real black powder and cold water used on it and the barrel is shiney bright with no pitting at all. The 54 started life with Pyrodex and the boiling water treatment and not 5 minutes ago I just ordered a new barrel for it due to the bad pitting. If it was only me that had had this problem with pyro I would simply man up and say it was my fault. BUT this rifle was cleaned to a spotless condition every time it was shot and yet it would continue to rust forever. I have seen many many posts about this very thing and the theory is that the chemicals left over from the pyro get into the pores of the barrel and continue to corrode the barrel forever. Actually I am manning up I'm spending several hundred hard earned dollars for a new barrel!!! I was not and am not now complaining I was just trying to save someone else the pain of seeing a good barrel go south from using this powder and cleaning method. Use real black you wont be disappointed!!!! FRJ

I am thinking exactly that!!! A smoothbore would be nice to have for grouse and rabbits and since I already have the barrel it would make a nice combo gun with the new barrel!!!FRJ
