In 1994 I was gifted a TC Hawken 50 caliber Flintlock. Later I electroplated all of the brass furniture to nickel and it looks great! Would it do any harm to clear coat the barrel with automotive clear coat? Thanx

Possibly. Bluing is controlled oxidation, unless it is that painted on stuff. As such, a clearcoat may trap moisture underneath and cause what was pretty bluing to rust.

Will automotive clear coat handle the temps of a barrel, or are you only going to shoot a few rounds in a casual range setting?

Are you saying the barrel is "in the white" polished but no finish? Clear coating is probably not the best idea because it will eventually start to come off. You can wax the barrel to add rust prevention or just keep it oiled.

If yer just gonna hang it on the wall it’ll probably be ‘okay’ though no-one I know would do such a thing. But if you plan on shooting it, and especially with it being a flinchlock, it ain’t gonna be pretty very long.

Red Owl I bought a Caswell electroplating kit on EBAY. It was easy to do and turned out well.
