I have not shot a store bought ball in 25 yrs an as soon as I run out of precut patches I will be making my own from a bolt of pillow ticking I bought this spring. Im still shootin store bought bore butter an also TOTW mink oil an I use bear grease but Im stingy with it due to being hard to find.

Mold several sizes of round balls and minie balls, make my own lubes, cut my own patches. Tried knapping flints; now I just purchase them.

I have made my own patches since day one when I got my first muzzleloader. I have ML rifles in .36, .40, .45, .50, .54 and .58 calibers and the .36 is the only one I do not cast balls for. Mostly because I rarely shoot it - it was purchased for the younguns to shoot and they have since grown and moved on. I do have a grandson who will probably be receiving it in the next few years, though.

I made most of the clothing I wore, shooting pouches, mocs, boxes, furniture and some other stuff when I attended rendezvous. I knew I could do it (my mother is a good seamstress and I watched her a lot as a kid) and we had little excess money when I started. Plus, I enjoyed doing as much as possible by my own hand.

I run my own 451,530,570,58 minnie and roll them in paper cartridge's which is my patching. The only thing I buy is buck shot for the Buck-N-Ball, bird shot, caps, powder, flints, parifan wax and grease for the revolvers.

I cast my own balls, cut my own cleaning patches, make loading blocks, powder measures (from wood, antler, brass, etc.), short starters, lubes and pre-lubed patche cloth, char cloth, make and modify jags (brass, wood, antler), sheaths, pistol wads and lots of other stuff.
I might be getting judgemental here, but I often wonder why anyone would ask, as we often see, where to buy loading for cleaning patches. :idunno: Just make yer own. It is simple and much less expensive than buying pre-made. I have even built a couple ml guns. Not very good at it, but I have done it. Doing for yourself is all part of this crazy avocation.

:hmm: Let's see. I cast 9 sizes of ball (never bought any). Make my own bags, measures, picks, patches, starters, cap holders (seldom shoot cap, though), wads, ramrods, horns (though not from scratch), knapping hammer and maybe a few other things.

The only thing I buy is Goex powder. Everything else I make or know someone who makes what I need and am able to trade. Leon

In the "other" category, if I am able to make it, I do. Includes short starters, ball boards, measures, jags, loading stands, vent picks, leather britches, main spring vise, etc. Granted, some of my stuff may look a bit crude, but it gets the job done!

I like your idea for a range box. Very clever. I bet it would work good on the tailgate of the truck too.

Oh, yeah, I make all my own stuff too. I buy patch mat'l in bulk, flannel sheets for cleaning patches ( used to have access to old diapers that worked real good then the kids all grow'd up). Patch lube is spit. I cast about 6 different size balls. Lead gets precious when trying to feed all these guns for two people.

I think we need another survey to see if more members are making their own Balls, patches and other stuff. I believe more do this now than the survey from 2007. I've got to believe more than 16% and 17% make their own balls and patches since it's so easy to do. What say ya'll?

Mold .32, .40, .50, .69 RB; .454 RB for revolver; .58 and .69 Minies; .451 slug; make lube, ramrods and tips, jags and breech scrapers; assorted guns and gun parts including locks. Have saved a lot of money over the years.

Same here. BTW, don't I still owe you for a horn strap?
