Hello,
Last summer I bought some 6 1/2 inch A2 tool steel to build a mortar cannon. Problem is every time I approach a machinest about building it for me they look at me as if I'm a Branch Dividian! Can anyone out there direct me to a machinest in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who can help me with this project?
Thanks,
Taylor in Texas

have you tried telling them that you want to build it for reenactments? that may stop the blank stares...

It is A2?

A2 is typically used for applications that require/warrant subsequent heat treating operations, and is desired because warpage of small or elongated (thin) components is minimal.

It machines "easier" than 01, but is still difficult. You are talking about having someone turn a very large diameter part with a sizeable bore.

I could be wrong...but if you are trying to dictate your price range for the labor, then no modern machine shop will even give you the time of day.

Just off the top of my head, if you are not willing to shell out 750+ dollars (that being a "backwoods" cheap shop)...forget it.

One offs that pose even the slightest chance of future legal complications are not worth it either.

Hope you track a shop down that will turn it.
