By the Way this is the Second Rifle i buy Yesterday, it a large and heavy Rifle in .67 Caliber in the Patchbox dated 1868 !
The Barrel and Lock are with Maker Markings the Gunsmith came from the City of Neu Strelitz , thesare only 60km away from my Hometown!!!
The Stock was Broken but my Buddy is a Restauriton Magic and make it strong and good next Week! The Rife has a 2 Stage Sight on it rich Engravings in Iron and Wood. But its very long and heavy . It is uncommon look like a long Range hunting gun or heavy Target? In the Patchbox are hunting dates scripted and the Triggerguard has a Red Deer engraved. What are you think?! The Barrel has deep and good Grooves no Rust ect. The Piston is damaged must new , we plan to open Breechplug vor clean all carefully.

Protected foresights like that usually mean that it is a target rifle - it is also, as you say - very heavy, again, something more like a target rifle than a hunting rifle. Also, in case of confusion, 'piston' translated from German into in English means 'nipple'.

Another clue to target use is the set trigger - German 'stecher' - not usually found on a hunting rifle.

I used to visit Neustrelitz when we lived in Berlin - I was in the British military mission to the Group of Soviet forces in Germany - BRIXMIS. The name on the barrel might not be the maker, but the retailer/seller of the rifle. IF we could see who it is, we might be able to look him up in Neue Stockel.

Hello Jager,As your First rifle that has no makers name visible you may find markings on the under side of the barrel near the breach and may say the caliber in mm. The second one definately shouts 60 Rod. Target Rifle with the Wire Front trigger. Rifles of this type often have a finger rest sticking up from the trigger guard as the set can be made very light..Old Dog..006.JPG

Large calibre rifles like this like large grain powder - in fact, they prefer it. Try Swiss #4 - 1.5Fg in such a large bore - starting with ~50gr and moving up in 5gr increments. This will be a patched BALL shooter.
