Need help with Identifying a cap and ball rifle (came from Kansas a long time ago)

Hello all,

So I have been told the rifle in question has been in my family since the early 1800's, I have searched and can't find anything that matches the markings on the barrel, please see attached pictures.

Markings, from left to right on barrel (Octagonal to round)

1. "172"
2. Unidentifiable mark
3. Letters "HP"
4. stamp that looks like sandals, lol
5. mark that looks like "Hh"

On top left of barrel, visible when rifle is assembled is an oval with what looks like EIG, FIG or EFG.

Any help will be much appreciated, this rifle goes back several generations and nobody has much info on it.

Your barrel is Belgian proofed. It was done some time from 1852 on...,

Inexpensive single barrel shotgun from around 1850 plus or minus. It’s not a rifle.

With the engraving,although not much I don't think it was inexpensive I would put it at least a midclass shot gun..

The other letters are inspector's stamps - they can be any letters of the alphabet. Missing is the Peron, a Nelson's Column landmark lookalike in the centre of Brussels. That, and the calibre in mm is sure to be there somewhere. Look for a stamped figure around 17 or 18 - 12g in metric. Most likely.

As for value I have pages of shotguns like this in a 1903 Sears catalog, priced from $5.00 up to as much as $25.00 - all very much alike.

There is another post on a similar item on these pages, again with input from me. Numbers might refer to assembly numbers, and marking all the pieces from a number of parts suppliers at the same time to keep them all together.
