need help with L.DAY rifle

Hi,I was at an estate sale this weekend and seen this rifle in a wooden box.It was in two peices and had never been removed.When I saw it the pretty wood caught my eye but I thought it was one of them 2 piece kentucky style rifles.It auctioned for 75.00.When I got it home and removed the blockes and took it out it has two barrels,like a over under but only one lock.The only thing I found in the crate with it was two targets with three holes in each one with a note that says (sighted in each barrel at 50 yards Lorence)Does anybody know how to attache the barrels to the stock and what have I got here.Thanks.

Well, if it is marked L. Day or L. Day and Sons, and you got it for $75.00, you got a deal. It sounds like a swivel breech, and Leonard is famous for building them. You may have saved $1200.00 or so. Leonard can be reached at 413-527- 0184. I'm sure he will help you out.

No, I have no idea what you've got but I'd love to see a photo of it. That might shed more light on the question.
But it sounds like a switch barrel of some type. Maybe a custom made one.

I am sittin here lookin at this thing close right now and it appears that the barrels twist as there is a block of steel in between the stock and barrel with a post that the barrels somehow goes over.THere is a hole to accept it but there are two pins in the way.Also it has a lever at the front of the inside trigger gaurd which isnt a safety but seems to be a release of some sort to turn the barrels as tow pins move in and out when it is pushed.

The barrels do rotate and the little lever in front of the trigger is the release. You may find that one barrel is rifled and one is smooth or they may even have different bore diameters. If I recall rightly, there is even a way to take up wear. A lot of skilled handwork goes into these rifles. Is it a flintlock or percussion? Either way, the locks are bespoke to these guns--no one else uses them, but Leonard has sold the actions separately on occasion, I believe.

Both barrels are rifled and appear to be the same cal well I know the are as the targets are marked 530 round ball+015 patch.The gun is a percussion lock.Has a serial#138 with a really nice striped dark maple stock.Thanks I will call the number you gave me today and try to get instructions to but it together,thanks.

I dont have a digital camera but it does say L.Day on the lock plate but nowhere else.
