So where can I find a list of parts for any particular gun. Also plans and/or a video that well help.I can't afford a nice smoothbore so I was figuring on building one a piece at a time.I'd like to build a Bess or a Charleville. The stock I figure maybe the hardest part for me to do. Thought I'd look around Friendship and check prices. I've built one from a kit(CVA Ky.) and found it enjoyable, but I'm wondering if I'm biting off more then I can gum.

You can get most plans from Tracks, MBS & most other venders. I suggest sticking the $ away & buying it all at one time. This way it is fresh, new, and if there are any problem parts you can return them. If you drag it out you may lose warranty on the the lock (unless it is a Chambers) and sometimes parts/venders change & etc. Plus you may change your mind on what you want while you are getting the parts. (Saw this happen with LOTS of guys) Save the $ up & buy it all at one time.

As for building it, it is a long way from the CVA kit. But with some time & patience & thinking ahead before ya wack things off, you will be OK. Buy the builders book "Gunsmiths of Grenville County" to guide you & you will be OK.

Parts for a longrifle. (Optional parts will depend on the style of gun your building.)

One or more good books on building a longrifle.

Barrel
Breech Plug
Lock
Trigger
Butt Plate
Trigger Guard
Side Plate
Rear Sight
Front Sight
Ramrod Entry Thimble (optional)
Ramrod Thimbles
Ramrod
Ramrod End Cap
Stock Nose Cap
Barrel Vent Liner (optional for Flintlock)
Drum (if breech plug is solid. For Caplock)
Nipple (for Caplock)
Barrel Underlugs
Lock Screws (to hold lock into stock)
Tang Screw (to hold barrel into stock)
Barrel Pins
Patch Box Cover (optional)
Toe Plate (optional)
Inlays (optional)
Vent Pick Inlay (optional)
Patchbox Door Release (optional)

Stock Wood (fullstock/halfstock? Maple, Walnut, Cherry, Ash)

Be aware that locating many parts into/on the stock is dependent on other parts being installed first.
For instance, you cannot install the butt plate until the barrel is inlet and installed. Why? Because the barrels location will dictate where the breech plug will be. The Breech plug dictates where the lock will be. The lock dictates where the triggers will be. The triggers dictate where the butt plate will be.......

Ya 'all got me scared now. :: I do think I'd be better off saving the money and then buying the parts or a new one. It does sound like a lot of fun, but I think it'd help if I had someone close by who's done it before. I'm good with my hands ,but that don't help much if you've never done it before. The CVA was pretty easy, even for me.This forum has a lot of good advise, so maybe I'll just try to put that patchbox on the KY. for now. Thanks all. :front:

One difference when putting together a more advanced "kit" is the tools required. You need proper drill bits, taps, rasps, files, etc. A drill press and a homemade tool for drilling tangs, lock bolts, and pins took alot of the worry out of the process.

save your money and pick a style you like, buy a complete set of parts from one of the major players
Chambers, TOTW, Pecatonie, etc..
Then whine like crazy on this forum and someone from Southern Indiana or close by will take pity on you and help you out.
Trust me that was my plan...and I was just shooting what I built.
and while it ain't perfect. it shoots well and the next one will be better
