I'm wanting to make a sling out of a 2 inch wide, 1/8 inch thick piece of leather. Lately, I need to use a walking stick (cane) in the woods and it would be nice to have my muzzleloader on my shoulder. I really don't want to put sling swivels in my stock or thimbles. I was thinking more of some kind of loop design. Does anyone have a pattern?

Simplest way is to just cut a slot in each end of the strap a little longer than the strap is wide. Leave 1/2 inch or so at each end, preferably with a round punched hole at the end to keep the slot from growing. Just feed one end of the strap through the slot and make one loop, then pass that through the other slot to make the second loop. Slide one end around the wrist and the second around the barrel. It should not interfere with the sight picture if the leather is thin enough.

That's what I did also. I've been using my sling for a few years, and keep it oiled occasionally. It stays in my shooting bag when I don't need it.

my wife made me a sling strap on her inkle loom it's about 2 inches wide. she folded the ends over and sewed leather pieces to each end, that keeps things from fraying. next she poked 2 holes through each piece of leather then just ran a thin length of leather lace through the holes. i tie one end around my barrel at the ramrod holder and the other around the wrist of the gun. if you lay the leather right when going over the barrel it doesn't interfer with your sight picture at all.
