Does anyone know if the books "Hawken Rifles: The Mountain Man's Choice" and "Fifteen Years in the Hawken Lodge" both by John D. Baird are the same book??? I know books on the Hawken tend to be a bit pricey and I have the chance to get a first edition of the Hawken Rifles book for 75.00. Any info would be appreciated.

Baird was the man that resurrected the Hawken. Before he wrote his books there was no information on them. I think he wrote more than one book. I am not that interested in Hawken guns anymore so I haven't delved that deeply in the lore.

You might check http://www.abebooks.com/ to see what you can find.

Noworries, "Hawken Rifles" and "Fifteen Years In The Hawken Lode" are certainly different books. If you like Hawkens you will want both books. Le Grand

Baird was certainly the first to research Hawken rifles and to write about his findings. However, much of Baird's work has been corrected and up dated by Hanson.

By all means, get Baird's books, but be aware that there are quite a few inaccuracies in them.

I own these books so I'll give my opinion of them (and others).

John Baird's HAWKEN RIFLES THE MOUNTAIN MAN'S CHOICE is a book well worth having if your interested in the Hawken Rifle. There are a number of photos and drawings along with interesting (if not totally true) historical information in the book.
My copy has 95 pages.
This book got me excited so I ordered John's book FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE HAWKEN LODE.

Although this book does have some interesting parts, in general I was sorely disappointed in it.
It (in my opinion) deals too much with "John 'Dinglehoofer' Baird (the author) and other recent guns and happenings.

A book I would recommend is by Charles E. Hanson, Jr called THE PLAINS RIFLE.
This book has a number of photos and a lot of information about the Hawkens and many of the other equally fine rifles made during the same period (Just once I would like to hear of someone building a Dimcik or a Gemmer ).

Another book worth having is Charles Hanson, Jr's THE HAWKEN RIFLE: ITS PLACE IN HISTORY. My copy is in paperback.

I haven't priced any of these books lately but places like Dixie, TOTW, MBS carry some of them so check out their prices before spending $75 on a copy. For book collectors paying more for a first edition may make sense, but for folks who just want a good reference book doesn't make much sense to me.
