Just rescued a TC Renegade from my brother. Rifle sat uncleaned in the closet for 15 years. Lock, stock and trigger are fine but barrel is beyond hope.

Are the Renegade and Hawken barrels interchangeable?
Are the Green Mountain barrels worth the money?

I hate putting $250 into a $200 rifle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try cleaning the barrel,,,never know what will come of it..Then if it doesn't work you had fun working on it..Might just have it rebored, check cost,new/rebored.

You can find Renegade barrels on ebay for as little as $50. Or you can have that barrel rebored. Green Mountain barrels are all they are supposed to be, but hard to come by these days. I believe all the Renegade barrels were 1 inch, while the Hawkens were 15/16th.

I had a 50 cal. Renegade that had a good stock and the barrel was a "rust bucket". I laid it back hoping to find a good barrel. A fellow range member heard me mention it, and told me he had a brand new Green Mountain barrel, that he'd sell me for a reasonable price. It was a 15/16 Hawken barrel, with round ball twist. I bought it hoping that I could make it fit.

I fitted my tang to the hook on the barrel with a little bit of blending of the top three flats on the new barrel. There is only a 1/32 per side difference. The part that the wedge pin goes thru is bolted on, so I added two washers, 1/32 each and the wedge fit perfect. I added 1/32 shim, fore and aft of the wedge pin, and I now have 1/32 gap on each side of the barrel, which is barely noticable. Kind of free-foated. I put the Renegade sights and ram rod thimbles on the GM barrel. I refinished the stock and left the metal work a little worn. The longer barrel makes a Renegade look better.

Here's the greatest part of all. This thing will shoot. I shot some of the new Alliant Black MZ and .018 patched round ball,.495 with wad over powder. I have three Hawkens, and none shoots like this rifle.

I really appreciate all the info from everyone.
I worked on the barrel for a couple hours. Tried JB Bore Paste,Hoppes,WD-40,and steel wool. It's too far gone.Plus, the nipple threads are all rusty and I just don't trust what the insides look like. It would make a good duck decoy anchor :hmm: .
I'm leaning towards makeing it into a more accurate target gun with a Green Mountain barrel and shooting it in the local matches.
Will try Ebay and gunbroker.
Again, thanks for the help.

The tc hawken in a 54 cal is a 1" barrel . I just bought a used one and the barrel will swap out with my renegade barrel .
Good luck with your project .

There is a guy, Bobby Hoyt, who will recut the rifling or rebore the rifle for a minimal fee. Give him a call.

I have a .54 Hawken TC I got burned on from gunbroker a few weeks ago. He is pretty sure he can recut the rifling and take care of the pitting. He could also rebore it to .58 caliber and make it one heck of a deer whacker!

I most likely will be stuck with the rifle so I'll probably get the rifling recut. A .54 Renegade barrel just sold on gunbroker last week for $30.00. Even if it was rusty, for $33.00 it could be recut.

If it is a 1" barrel, it'll be a killer .56 smoothbore or .58 rifled bore...in .58 it might even be recut to slow twist for balls and OMGosh that would be awesome!

You didn't say what you had to pay your brother for the gun but I agree a person can quickly run the cost of a rebuild to more than the gun is worth. It begs the question why do it? If you could simply buy another one already in good shape which has not been severely abused?
On the other hand there are situations where sentimental value override economical value. Is this your case?
TC did not see fit to make the 54 in a 15/16 barrel. They did make a 58 cal in a 1” and that would be my choice for you. Second would be the 56 smooth bore.
Check out a re-bore.

My brother gave me the rifle free.Could'nt pass up that deal. Everything but the barrel is now in great shape and the stock has some really nice grain.
I really don't want a smooth bore or 58.
Leaning towards a new GR barrel.Should have a really nice looking and accurate rifle for $250.
