New bench rifle! Where to start? Spidermetic, Rice and KR Bresien barrels, sight recommendations and other questions!

After putting up a wanted post a while back I was extremely blessed to have to opportunity to purchase this beautiful rifle.

Featuring three barrels a KR Bresien (tagged 530), a Rice Match Grade (tagged 54 but with tape labeling it 530) and a Spidermetic (50 cal) (currently mounted) all equipped with false muzzles

They all seem in excellent shape and everything I can find online seems to point to these all being excellent choices for my task.

I intend to shoot Cross Sticks, Chunk and Bench matches with these it seems one is specifically tapped for the included open sights so I’ll relegate that to chunk duty and rest have much longer sights mounts (I’m assuming a type of peep)

The receiver seems to also be tapped for sights?




A few questions.

When swapping the breachplug between barrels how tight should it be? Should I slather it with antiseize?

does anyone have suggestions on rear sights for bench guns? (Preferably affordable options) there seems to be plenty of holes for mounting so I’m sure some production item would fit these hole I just don’t know what!

Load development maybe teflon patching? Ball sizes etc? Load starting points? Any suggestions welcome!

I’m not sure where to start with these my goal is to keep updating this this until I can put down some tight groups at 100 yards.

I know these forum has some bench masters hoping for some advice!

I am jealous you got a nice setup there. Cross sticks was my favorite match and probably one of the most competitive and frustrating matches you can shoot. You will need to work up a load that will shoot a 1" group at 100 yards and then you have to put that group where it needs to be to win. You will also need some wind flags and learn how to read them, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on them they tend to get shot up. Then a back injury put an end to that. I used to shoot a .54 will see if I can find my shooting book. I used Redfield sights. I let my rifle go but kept my Redfield's. The guy who bought the rifle thought he was going to get the Redfield's for the price of a Lyman, all 3 of my Redfield's are in good condition. Have an International with the adjustable aperture and 2 smaller ones I set up for open sights, and a complete set of inserts for the front sight.

I put a Lee Shaver’s rear tang midrange Soule with the Hadley eye cup & the new style Parker & Hale front target globe on my midrange bench rest gun.
You stating “ affordable “ which is a subjective term, it’s different for everyone.
This set up was under 500.00 for both front & rear sights, the Hadley cup & the extra sight cards.
It was money well spent IMHO
