I have been wanting to buy a flintlock for some years now and could never seem to make it happen. The past 3 or 4 month I have been getting more specificate as to exactly what this ideal rifle would look like. The forum has been a huge aid in this reguard.

Last weekend I happened to be driving past a local rifle makers home and when I saw him on the porch, decided to stop and ask some questions. We had talked on a few occasions and I even shot one of his rifles a couple times at a BP shoot. His work is exceptional.

I told him I was considering a new flinter (my first) and we discussed some options. He invited me into his shop in his house and he showed me the .40 cal he was currently building for a customer. I then proceded to describe the flinter in my mind. The barrel would be a swamped .54 caliber with a browned finish. The lock would be a large Siler and fire by double set triggers. Carving in the stock would be simple and not too ornate as would the patchbox. Furniture could be either iron or brass but I like the way brass ages to that beautiful patina.

When I finished with the discription, he said maybe this could be of interest to you. He took no more then 3 steps and took from its resting spot in the shadows, the rifle I had been talking about. It was not just close but exactly as it was pictured in my mind! It is an early Lancaster model in the style of JP Beck, for a pre rev war era. Normally this guy only builds from a customers orders but last winter he got a good deal on the lock and barrel and built this beauty with no buyer in mind.

We decided to meet the next day at the local range and I could shoot it. At the arranged time next morning I was shooting one SWEET rifle. Ignition was very fast and reliable. The Davis triggers were smooth and light. Accuracy was wonderful! Not being used to flint I had to concentrate hard on my follow through. At 50 yards from a bench I could get the holes in the target to touch. She is for sure a straight shooter. Before I finished I shot offhand at the same range and managed a group better then I could have hoped.

This was the look and style I wanted, the accuracy I demanded and I got a deal too good not to accept. I now own this beautiful new rifle!

Sir,

Congratulations and welcome to the world of flintlocks. They are a truly unique weapon. I'd shot percussion cap Civil War muzzleloaders for a great long while and just got my first two flintlocks this year. Flintlocks are completely addictive.

Sounds like you found an extraordinary weapon. Good luck!

Best Regards,

Sky-Dogg

Way to go, Britches! Sounds like one beautiful, tack-drivin' rifle you got there :RO: I'm sure you're going to enjoy it at the range and in the woods

Good gracious...you must be living under a star...what are the odds that such a scenario would unfold...sounds fantastic!!

Some things are just meant to be.

I am quite happy for both of you. I am sure that the builder was pleased to have worked on a gun and had his vision and handiwork produce such a result.

I wish you great success with it.

Got pics? If not, better get some so that we can all drool! ML, better send it my way so I can check it out. I will shoot it for a while and let you know if you will like it, if not, I will take it off your hands!

Great story, ya could make it a little better by posting some pictures!!! One problem you will never have to deal with is "buyers remorse"

I am Happy for you. I kow these things happen, have a sharps that Destiny handed me on a silver platter. Rifle like you just got here, is a "Lifer".

Britches , sounds sweet please post a pic or to if you have the capabillity .

Congratulations on your find & decision to move on it. You won't regret going to a rocklock, as other's have stated, they soon become a lifelong love affair.

Wonderful! A J.P.Beck in .54 is what I almost bought from Ted Fellows some 15 years ago and often second-guess how that would have been. Sounds like you and yours is a marriage made in Heaven if your's starting off shooting so well. A pretty gun is nice, but an accurate gun is better. Both together is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

Now what's the story you told your wife? :haha: "I've always wanted one like this. Grandpa had one exactly like this that I remember as a child, and he only wanted $200 for it", etc., etc.

Pictures. Need pictures.

You are missing out on the best part of having a custom made flinter, those long months of anticipation as you wait for your gun to arrive. I would be glad to allow you to experience that "kid-waiting-for-Christmas-feeling", if you'll just ship the gun to me. I'll send it back to you in 6-8 months. :winking:

Seriously, all jealo...err..joking aside congratulations on your new flinter. Have lots of fun and make lots of smoke with her. :redthumb:
