Hi I’m new to the forum but have been into muzzleloading for awhile. My question is does anyone know how the old timers would have cleaned their rifle barrels of fowling while in the field? I suspect that they didn’t have time to do a thorough clean if the fowling got to the point that it was hard to ram home a patched ball.

I'm in texas too welcome.

welcome, and since no one has responded to your ? I'll through this out there, when doing a woods walk if the ball starts to get hard to seat I just chew on a patch and run it down the barrel, flip it and run it down again, cleans it well enough to continue on with no loss of accuracy, I would thing the old timers would have done about the same, my .02

Hello and welcome from PA. Would agree that field cleaning would be nothing but a chewed patch ran down twice. Thorough cleaning woulda been later by fire but still only water/patch till clean.

Welcome from West Central Texas. Texas is, as the saying goes, “a whole other country” and kinda big. So what part are you from?
