New GPR, no spark

I'm a newbie to flintlocks, just got this GPR new.
Having trouble getting any kind o decent spark, tried the flint every way you can, then went down to Log Cabin & got some English flints from Dan, still no joy, he said I might have a soft frizzen.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well if its new, I would contact Lyman and get the lock or at least the frizzen replaced. It should be warranted.

If you're feeling brave you can harden a frizzen yourself - but I would go with the warranty route first if that is happening.

Have you cleaned the frizzen and flint with alcohol,to get any oil off it? Is the flint almost against the frizzen at half cock?

Under no circumstances do any mods to the lock while you can get warranty work done. :nono:

Does your set-up look like this?

The lead wrap is unnecessary and was just on in this picture. Leather works as well. Notice the extra piece of leather under the real flint. I am going to guess there is nothing wrong with the frizzen.

Update, just got back from Log Cabin, Rick put a new frizzen on for me & got it sparking pretty good,he put the 3/4 English flint flat side up..
No charge, warranty work. :thumbsup:
Think I'm ready for the range.

The flint will give you longer life if you follow Ernie Biggs suggestion, putting a thick piece of leather under the wrapped flint to raise the POI up where the flint strikes the face of the frizzen. This technique allows you to use the flint Bevel UP, and that will give you the longer flint life.

You can also help the clearance of your flint and the top of the frizzen by reducing the height of that cock screw. Drill the hole lower on the stem than where Ernie has his currently. Using a hole in the stem for a rod or nail to form a "T" to let you turn the cock screw will give you a tighter fit( hold on the flint wrap and flint) than using that screw slot and a screw driver.

Took it to the range today with my fingers crossed....
Hooh Rah !!!! success :bow: 25 shots with out failure, had to pick a couple of times, and then there were the three times the pan went off, before I realized some stupid guy forgot the powder & ball :rotf: By then it was just getting to hot, called it a day.
Guess I'm hooked now :thumbsup:
