Sorry... I would like to, but can't help you very much. You will most likely get more replies to your query, but perhaps this information will help you a little bit.

About 6 or 7 years ago, I had a Charles Daly half stock .50cal rifle, but it was made in Italy by Investarms. That doesn't mean that your's is worse or better, just different, and your's is in .45cal also... so I really can't recommend specific loads.

I would think that a .440 diam swaged Hornady or Speer round ball and 0.015"-0.018" "ticking" patch lubed with "moose milk" (I use Ballistol & water), though Bore Butter would be easier to find. That might be a good place to start. 40gr of FFFg should not hurt the gun or you either.

The Charles Daly gun that I had was a fair shooter, had really nice double set triggers and a nice stock that I believe was Cherry.

Regards, and shoot safely!

I had an Inverstarms in .45 that loved 60g of 3F, a .440 round ball, and a 15th patch. I would work between the 40-60g powder range to see what works best. You might want to try some short conical bullets too. Good luck and have fun.

The information I have on the Charles Daly muzzleloaders indicates the company discontinued making them in 2000.
The rifles they produced were: a Deluxe Hawken Rifle in .50 and .54 caliber, a Hawken Rifle in .45, .50 and .54 caliber and a Hawken Carbine in .50 caliber with a 22 inch barrel.

As you say it was made in Spain, you probably should limit it to shooting roundballs with a 90 grain FFg or Pyrodex RS powder load for a maximum.
I say this because some of the Spanish barrels are proofed for this sort of maximum loads pressures.

zonie :)

 thanks zone the gun is vey heavy chery stock and the barrel is made of large diameter stock as any of mt .50s

Something that owners of Spanish proved rifle barrels should be aware of. The proof pressure is the minimum allowable for export. In otherwords the barrel suffered no damage when proved to that pressure. It doesn't mean the gun will disintegrate if an extra kilopascal sneaks in there. :winking:
