New guy thinking about an 1861

Sid here and new to black powder. I have always had an interest in older black powder firearms, pre-cartridge, and now that centerfire ammunition is so expensive and hard to find I'm thinking about getting an 1861 Navy again. I'm looking for recreational shooting, not re-enactment or home defense, basically just plinking with enough power to turn a mean dog away on my farm.

We don't have many British B.P. revolvers here as all our wars were overseas and usually stand up
in file at 50yds. in the 18 & early 19th cent.. (That is apart from the 95th Scurmishers, in the Peninsula). SEE SHARP'S BOX SET!!
BUT we do have quite a few people still shooting 1860's British Long Range BP/ML Match Rifles out to 1200 yds and there is a good following of the Renowned .577" Enfield in it's various forms. Orginal and P/H Replicas. Even Baker's Flint Rifles from THE 95th..

Mainly it's for recreational shooting so, stretching the powder charge and reducing the lead consumption allows more recreational shooting! Of course, at some point if I enjoy this type of shooting, an 1860 will join in the fun at some point!

I know new guys tend to get the 1858 almost exclusively, the classic Colt pattern really appeals to me.

Midway and Taylor both have the 1861 in 36. The Taylor at $409 has the steel trigger guard and backstrap I prefer but, the Midway is $300 right now with brass backstrap and trigger guard.

I scored a 1lb can of Triple Se7en FFFg so, good there. Caps are MIA so, until I figure that out I have a bit of time to decide on the pistol.
