Hi everyone, I'm new to the site. But also new younger builder. I've always wanted to build a rifle. But never cared for the lower end kit guns. not saying there bad, I just don't care for them. How ever few weeks back. I ended up a estate sale. A picked part of a rifle up. it's missing only the lock, trigger & guard. Plus needs to be milled out to fit all the parts. I'm hoping to go with a flint lock. should build nice target gun.

Picked up the book in hopes of helping me along the way.

That should be a great project. I see no reason you couldnt get either a flint or a cap lock to go on it.

Thanks everyone, funny thing about the estate sale. It was tagged as a toy gun LOL. It was the only thing in the whole sale that had to do with hunting, shooting. I'm 99% sure I'll be making it a flint lock. Now on the hunt for a lock !

Find someone who has a Track of the Wolf Catalog. Their section on locks has the images shown full sized. Match those full sized illustrations to the mortise you have in your stock. The same for your triggers.

The book you picked up is good, but an assembly book, such as "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" by Peter Alexander or "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle" by Chuck Dixon will provide you a lot of good information that you will need to build your rifle.

Hi Cody,
Nice find. Unfortunately, whoever started it already made some classic newbie mistakes. The flats around the lock and side plate are poorly done and hopefully can be corrected. If you view the following thread, you will see how those and other features are done correctly:

Dave fine looking rifle ! Do you thing since it's hasn't been cut all the way out. I could just refill it or cut and glue in a new strip of maple and sand the whole thing flat ?

thanks for the help guys
