Here's Ruth, a new Haines Lancaster .54 I'll be hunting with this fall. She was finished plain (if you can call her that) from a Dunlap kit by a very talented member of this forum.
Took me almost 3 years to get just a few things made not so well. I decided if she was gonna be pretty and reliable, I'd better get her in someone else's hands quickly.
Ruth and I will be chasing whitetails through the PA mountains together. Finally, something other that a T/C to hunt with!

That sure is a beautiful piece of wood. I'd say you're going to have a dandy whitetail slayer there. Congratulations on getting a fine rifle.

Very nice!! More info please...barrel maker, length, swamped?, stock maker, etc.

That IS a gorgeous piece of wood! I am in the planing stages of a Haines rifle myself. I feel, after the choice of style is made; the barrel, lock, trigger and wood are the most important desisions. Everything else is cosmetic and a reflection of the owner's personality. My choice would be pretty much as yours...well except for putting the lock on the other side. I'm one of those "right brain" people.
I very much like your choice to let the wood remain unadorned. A patch box would hide an otherwise beautifully grained piece of maple.

Texcl,
The wood was provided by Daniel at Dunlap as part of the Haines kit. 3 years ago, he looked thru a few deliveries until he found a pretty good one. He called it a maple 5 but I've been told over over it is at least M7.

Hi Mazo,
This new rifle was part of a 3 yr old Dunlap kit that I started but never found the time to complete. They made the stock on their duplicator. One of the pics shows the stock before and after carving.
The barrel is a Rice 38" type C in .54 cal and browned by the riflemaker.

Thanks Snow,
I wanted a plain rifle that an average guy like me might have owned 230 years ago. I had planned to build the rifle myself - my 1st rifle. I have no carving or engraving experience, so those are out. I never had any use for a patchbox on the T/C rifle I own - in fact, I remember stuffing it with patches to cut down on the noise - so that's out. I settled on a rifle that did not survive - the average rifle. Daniel at Dunlap said something to me back then like "good thing you aren't carving it, the figure would be tough to carve for a beginner".
Thanks for complimenting her.

Thanks Hanshi

I wanted a simple rifle that is so beautiful that the deer will stop me to ask where I got it. I won't have to look for them.

Thanks Mountaiman,

Appreciate the compliments.

I'm just finishing up a hunting pouch, a patch knife and a horn for Ruth.
