Agreed, few people would think of taking a rifle hunting without first working up loads and, at least, checking the sights. With shotguns, folks just tend to assume it will shoot where it's pointed and pattern according to its' marked choke. To get it all together with a smoothbore probably takes more time and experimentation than working up a rifle load. Smoothbores are quirky.
