You are correct, Dave, BUT...
You do, however, have to make sure that you have all your paperwork in order, including a flyer from the sponsoring club holding the match.

Unfortunately, NJ firearms law is exemption-based, meaning the possession is illegal, EXCEPT under defined circumstances (including matches, hunting, etc.). That basis itself is probably unconstitutional, given the McDonald v. Chicago decision, but don't look for that to change without more sweeping court decisons, as very few in New Jersey government have any desire to stand up and implement change.
I'm sorry if I'm more pessimistic, Dave, but while I would like to see out-of-state shooters going to matches in NJ, they should drive under the speed limit, lock their guns in the trunk, and politely deny permission for any officer to search their car without a warrant.
