You are correct, Dave, BUT...

You do, however, have to make sure that you have all your paperwork in order, including a flyer from the sponsoring club holding the match.

Google the case of Brian Aitken to see how bad it can get.... Link

Unfortunately, NJ firearms law is exemption-based, meaning the possession is illegal, EXCEPT under defined circumstances (including matches, hunting, etc.). That basis itself is probably unconstitutional, given the McDonald v. Chicago decision, but don't look for that to change without more sweeping court decisons, as very few in New Jersey government have any desire to stand up and implement change.

I'm sorry if I'm more pessimistic, Dave, but while I would like to see out-of-state shooters going to matches in NJ, they should drive under the speed limit, lock their guns in the trunk, and politely deny permission for any officer to search their car without a warrant.

Kevin,

There are some extenuating circumstances about the case you linked too including the guy driving-around for a couple of weeks with the hand guns in his trunk. Had he been smart enough to join a NJ based gun club, he could have said that he was on the way to the range, for instance. And then there's the mental thing with his own mother calling the cops on him, so it's really not cut & dry as I see it, although he did get the raw end of the deal. Once Mommy called the cops and then spilled the beans, they had probable cause to do the search, no?

As to locking the guns in the trunk and denying a search without a warrant, that's the way it's done in NJ now.

As to what the real world is in NJ, folks come from CT, NY, PA, MD, DE and other states to come to the same range you did last September (we sure had FUN, didn't we?) to shoot something called IPSC which is done at a USPSA Match: www.uspsa.org . Since most of these states allow you to purchase hand guns with permits, folks just bring a flyer for the Match with them. Cause these folks are already registered firearms owners in their state of residence.

IMHO only folks who do JUST black powder, and who rely on the federal laws to mean that a rifle isn't a rifle and a hand gun isn't a hand gun, question whether or not to show-up at a NJ Match. Multi-Disciplined shooters like myself drive all over the place, and our club president just took a bunch of guys to Fort Benning GA for a big 3-Gun Match in his motor-home. Guys from outta state with AR's coming here to a 3-Gun Match don't seem to worry much about it either :idunno: .

Enjoy your Holiday if we don't chat before that  .

Ray's is out of business, I believe. Effinger's in Bound Brook may be a source. BUT, the main reason you can't find a flintlock or traditional
percussion gun for sale in NJ is because there's no demand for them. Go to a public range in NJ(yes, we do have them) before the season opens and count the inlines vs. traditionals. 99% inline. If I shoot at the Clinton range, I'm usually the only one.

Duane

Duane, I think you and I must be the only 2 to EVER shoot traditional MLs at the Clinton range. I know I always get some funny looks when I shoot there.

The problem is that no stores anywhere near me sell them and no mail order place will send anything to New Jersey. I know they are not illegal to own and can be used for hunting. It's just trying to find someone who sells them and sells powder.
Harry's Army & Navy has (3) sections of their used guns full of ML...I think Ray's Sporting Goods would be good too...that covers the north and center of NJ.

Harry's has moved back into a new shopping center and the split off the gun related stuff. It is all next door and is called Cherokee Trading Co.

I had my double-barrel 10 gauge shotgun breaking clay birds there last summer for a class I gave to fellow NRA Instructors :haha: and that thing drew some looks too! :rotf:

The name of the new place is Cheyenne Mountain, and it's in the center of the strip mall behind Harry's.
