I have a very old knife blank I found in an old barn.( was a file ) I got it cleaned up and re-shaped it and now I would like to know how to afix the walnut handle to the blade in PC fashion.
Brass pegs ? lead pegs ?

I've heard the earlier knives used steel pins but that's just me talking. I try to make things arount the early 1800's and I personally use copper wire that I buy at the electrical section at home depot.
I would start by drilling then gluing the handle down.
I then use vise grips and peen one end of the copper into a mushroom, I cut it to size using my dremel tool, about 1/8" too long, if you cut it with side cutting plyers it ends up bieng not round and it's difficult to peen round again. install it in the hole and peen the other side into a mushroom with it laying on a small anvil. I would recomend that you be carful at this point, I've split out the handle by trying to peen too much material flat. I then use my belt sander to flatten everything down and smooth it out.

I see two issues in your photos.
1. Did you already glue your glue your slabs to the tang?
2. If so, is the tang soft enough to drill through?

If both of these get a yes, drill your holes with a drill press and drive your pins through. I use heavy coat hanger wire for steel, or brass pins, or heavy guage copper wire (10 or 12).

after youve drilled your holes for the pins, use a counter sink, small size!, to do a very shallow counter sink in the wood, this will give the material something to mushroom into and not cause craking, than sand as stated above and finish.

n you use coat hanger wire for pins ,have you ever cut your pin to length then semi-point one end chuck the other into a drill and spin it in through the pin hole this will redice any chance of split out and make an extremly tight fit bit thr pin must be streight after it is in just snip each side and brad it down. :v

Thanks two-bellys Thats like the old way of putting a finish nail in a small piece of 1/4 round and it worked out great. I'm going to put a deer antler button inlay on it like in the photo, I know, I know , I should have done that befor I assenbled the handles. I'll post a photo of the finish sheathe and inlay once I'm done. What you think? it's one sharp file !!! http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/BOGG_2007/P4153313.jpg
