Hi and welcome from northern New Mexico! As for squirrel rifles, take a look at the Southern Mountain Rifle (SMR) kit that Jim Kibler offers. You'll have to put it together but there is a lot of information on that here on this forum. One thing is for sure, the lines on that rifle are absolutely beautiful!

Hey there! Where ya at in VA? I'm in Warsaw. I just bought a Pedersoli Frontier in .36 to be my squirrel gun this year. I was looking at a .32 flintlock but it got snagged before I could put a bid in on it.

Thanks for the welcome. The Kibler SMR is high on my list of options. Not sure what caliber, .32 as a classic squirrel caliber or .45 to keep the barrel weight down and have the option of deer hunting. Agreed it's a beautiful rifle, would be my first kit gun.

Thomas, thanks for the welcome. I live in Hampton Roads but my hunting spot is South of Lynchburg. More deer there than squirrel but I still look forward to muzzleloader squirrel hunting. Peace and quiet if the squirrels don't show.

Welcome! I see the Virginia muzzleloader regulations specify .40 or larger for deer, bear and elk! Muzzleloading rifles are legal for fall turkey AND Spring Gobbler as well as small game like squirrel and rabbits.

I WISH there were some fox squirrels to hunt, but we only have scrawny little grays in the mountains west of Martinsville.

Welcome from Pa.. I like the versatile .40 for small game. Load it down for small game , stoke'er up for bigger. Besides , a .40 barrel is a little liter due to the slightly larger hole. A full load for ground hogs is killer, while not blowing the critter up so ya have more to eat. Git-er-done.

Welcome from the opposite bank of the Potomac.

Depending on your needs, there is a squirrel rifle, OR something like a 20 gauge trade gun as an option. I switched because my "squirrel woods" are too close to neighborhoods if I was shooting up into a tree and missed..., the ball could possibly land in a bad place. AND a .600 ball will slam deer.
