Just screwed in a new 1/4 x 28 spitfire nipple into my t/c renegade, perfect fit. But the hammer, by just the tiniest little bit, when I let it down carefully on the nipple doesn't come down flush on the nipple. The edge of the opening on the hammer barely hangs up on the tip of the nipple and prevents the hammer coming down the rest of the way. I'm sure this has come up before, and I'm counting on you guys (and gals, of course) to give me a simple solution. Thanks!

My deerhunter was the same way. I used a dremel to open the cup slightly. Go slow, I haven't had any problems since.

Probably the real way to fix it is to heat it and bend it to fit. Was probably close on you other one. Or give me a call and I'll take you to a muzzleloader gunsmith that will fix it right. He's very reasonable!

I don't know if this helps, but I had the same problem with my T/C Hawken. I replaced the nipple with one from Dixie that I was told would fit. It fired but the hammer didn't quite set right. After trying numerous ideas of my and my buddies, I changed the nipple and it works like a charm. The nipple must have been just a tad off. I dunno.

While there are dozens of 1/4"-28 nipples from various mfg's, one thing that does vary is how "tall" they are.

And it's the height that makes the difference in the geometry of whether the hammer will hit the nipple square or not within the existing recess.

Originally, T/C made two different heights of "rifle" nipples.

I use the (short) one on one of my rifles because the geometry works.

Before you go about altering the face of your hammer or heating/bending it you should decide if you "always" want to use the new nipple you have selected and then stick with it.

If you alter the hammer then decide to go back to a genuine T/C nipple (or perhaps a hot shot or ampco etc) you will once again find yourself potentially altering your hammer "again".

AH-HAH!! I been having some of the same issues. Now I am gonna go measure the old nipple length and compare it to the new one. Glad I read this thread.

Two easy measures.
Use a nipple that is somewhat 'standard', like an Ampco or Hot Shot.
And, DO, open the front of the hammer. Use that Dremel to make a 'V' opening in the nose.
If that does not cure the issue, you may have to use heat and bend open the hammer a bit. It can be done but some of the old TC castings require acetylene torch heat to bend, a propane wouldn't do it. Ask me how I know.
