New Pietta 1858 Army Bison .44

Hi everyone,
I'm sorta new at this, but I have a quick question. I have just purchased the above revolver and can't seem to find the correct percussion cap # 10 or #11. All the rifles I own are a #11. Does this hold true for percusion revolvers?

My Pietta 58 Remmy takes #11's. My Pietta 60 Colt takes #10. Seems like they'd use the same size for all.

Most revolvers seem to prefeer #10s rather than #11s. I've used #11s and pinched them slightly so they weren't too loose...not the best solution but saved a trip to the gun shop.

I am making a trip to Gander Mtn. today so I can stock up on supplies. Unfortunatly I'm out of #11 caps so I can't try one on before I go. I guess I'll buy 10 and 11's and see which ones fit. I will post it when I know for sure.

I have one of those, really enjoy it. #10 caps are a snug fit, I very carefully use the hammer to press them onto the nipple - pointing down range for safety, it squeezes 'em on tightly for better ignition.

I changed the nipples out on my Pietta Remmy to Uncle Mikes stainless ones. They take a #11 CCI cap. They work good too.

I have another question about these 30gr. units of Pyrodex I see on different websites. Are they used in BP revolvers or only rifles and can they be used in conjuction with a patchless round ball? As you can probably tell, I'm new to the B/P revolver scene. Some things I have been reading say to use a patched roundball and others say use a wad and some say use powder, ball and bore grease. I need some recomendations so I don't blow myself to you know where!!!! I appreciate all your help and thank my lucky stars I found this website and you folks.

I've never used the pyrodex pills but I have heard they do work. Don't use a patched ball. I like wads but they're kind of expensive. Over ball grease works but can get messy.

I don't use the Pyrodex revolver pellets, just loose pyrodex. My Pietta Remmy seems to like heavy loads. If i fill the chamber right flush then seat a wonder wad with the loading lever then the ball it puts the ball Just below the mouth of the chamber and shoots pretty good. That is a bout a 47 gr equiv. load of Pyrodex P. If you don't use the wads, then a little grease over the ball will help to keep the fouling soft.

a PRB is not used in any BP revolver, anyone telling you that is FOS. load powder and felt 'button'. insert a slug or RB into chamber that shaves a ring of lead off. using a felt 'button' over powder with a dab of lube atop or a pre-lubed felt is good idea. using dry felt button you need to use lube, maybe over ball. good luck, Blizzard.

All good advice, except one...(see below).

Patched round balls are used in single shot bp pistols, not revolvers. Revolvers use a 'bare' round ball or conical bullet.

Loading sequence:

1. powder
2. either nothing (see 4 below), cream of wheat or other inert filler(see 4 below), dry felt wad (see 4 below) or lubed felt wad (do NOT see 4 below)
3. unpatched, bare round ball, slightly larger than chamber diameter so that a thin ring of lead is shaved off when pushed into the chamber.
4. Depending on the option chosen in 2 above, a layer of grease or bullet lube over the ball. Or nothing, if you chose to use the lubed felt wad in 2 above.

I watched a movie on loading and firing a bp revolver on the Cabelas website. They also advised loading:
1-powder
2-roundball-.451dia.
3-borebutter over the ball
This seems like the easiest way to do it.After all the years I have shot bp rifles, it will seem strange not using a patched ball.

Another question. The handbook says 28gr. of Pyrodex and 34gr. of bp are the max loads. From everyones experience, is this true or can these revolvers take more grains? I really appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. I just want to be safe and not make any mistakes when firing this thing.

As long as you are using PyrodexP or real black powder you aren't going to blow one up. It may or may not be as accurate but you can fill the chamber full with just enough room to seat a ball and it is safe. Brass frames may stretch some if a lot of heavy loads are used but a steel frame should last a Long time. Pyrodex compresses more than real black so you can fill the chamber right to the top and still have room to seat a wad and ball.

So what your saying is Rebel, you pretty much find your most accurate load with this revolver the same as you would do with a bp rifle.Right!!!
